Summary of the 18th amendment
During the late 1800s, prohibition movements occurred across the us by religious groups who felt like “drunkenness” was ruining our nation. The movement reached its peak in 1920 when congress approved the 18th amendment, prohibiting the manufacture, transportation and sale of alcohol!(not the consumption). The amendment ended up not having the outcomes they expected, it did not lessen the crime rate or fix social problems. It actually led to a rise in organized crime because people would sell bootleg alcohol out of their homes (which ended up killing around 1000 people a year during prohibition because of its dangerous ingredients) . Since prohibition was a disappointment, congress ratified the 21st amendment which repealed prohibition. |
Carrie nation
was an American woman who was a radical member of the temperance movement, which opposed alcohol before the advent of Prohibition. She is particularly noteworthy for attacking alcohol-serving establishments (most often taverns) with a hatchet.
she also railed against fraternal orders, tobacco, foreign foods, corsets, skirts of improper length, and mildly pornographic art of the sort found in some barrooms of the time. She was an advocate of woman suffrage.
